How to self-host Nextcloud on Contabo

Nextcloud is your own Google Drive or Dropbox — files, sync, sharing, calendars and contacts — on a server you control, for a flat monthly cost instead of a per-user fee. Contabo has a free 1-click image that does most of the wiring for you. Here's how to set it up, how to size it (hint: by disk, not CPU), and the gotchas nobody warns you about.

Who it's for

Individuals, families and small teams who want to own their data, escape per-seat cloud fees, or meet data-residency requirements — and who accept running a server. If you want zero maintenance, a managed cloud suite is the honest answer. If you're happy being the admin, Nextcloud gives you the whole thing for one flat bill.

Path A — Contabo's free 1-click image (easiest)

Contabo's Nextcloud 1-click runs a Docker stack on Ubuntu 24.04: Nextcloud, a Caddyreverse proxy (automatic HTTPS), Redis for caching and MariaDB for the database — so you skip installing any of that yourself.

  1. 1. Choose Nextcloud as the 1-click app when ordering the VPS (or add it to an existing one via the control panel → your instance → the three-dot menu → Reinstall).
  2. 2. Set your password — it's used for both SSH access and the Nextcloud admin login.
  3. 3. Point an A record for your domain at the VPS IP, and add that domain to Nextcloud's trusted_domains (see gotchas — this is the #1 first-login trap).
  4. 4. Wait ~30 minutes, open your domain over HTTPS, and log in.

One thing to know: this is Contabo's own recipe (MariaDB + Redis + Caddy), notthe official Nextcloud All-in-One. It's a perfectly good stack; just don't expect AIO's built-in backup and Office/Talk toggles — those are Path B.

Sizing — pick by disk, not CPU

Nextcloud is light on compute and heavy on storage, which grows with your files, versions and trash. Every Contabo tier clears the 4 GB / 2 CPU recommendation, so choose the plan by the disk you need:

PlanRAM / storage~ Price/mo
Cloud VPS 48 GB / 100 GB$6.60
Cloud VPS 612 GB / 200 GB$9.00 — good for ~5 users
Cloud VPS 824 GB / 300 GB$16.80

Need more disk but not more CPU? Contabo's Core VPS plans can add a storage extension rather than making you jump to a bigger, pricier compute tier.

Prefer to run it yourself? (Path B)

For maximum control, the official Nextcloud All-in-One (a Docker image managed from a web UI) is the vendor-recommended route — it bundles a Borg-based backup tool, optional Collabora/OnlyOffice and Talk, and uses PostgreSQL. You install Docker yourself (note AIO doesn't support snap-based Docker) and manage the domain and reverse proxy. There's also a Snap package for the simplest single-command install, though it leaves out Talk and Office.

Gotchas that cost an evening

trusted_domains

Nextcloud rejects any hostname not listed in its config.php trusted_domains array. Point your domain, then add it there — otherwise you get locked out at the first login.

Back up the data AND the database

A backup of your files without the database (or vice versa) can't be restored. Dump the MariaDB database and copy the data directory together, on a schedule, off the server. Contabo snapshots help but aren't a substitute for an app-consistent DB dump.

PHP memory and caching

Raise PHP memory_limit to 512M or uploads and updates fail. Redis (in the 1-click) handles file locking and caching — without a memory cache, Nextcloud nags in the admin panel and feels sluggish.

The maintenance is yours

OS patches, Nextcloud upgrades, cert renewal, watching the disk fill — all on you. That's the real trade for owning your data.

The honest math vs Google Workspace / Dropbox

A cloud suite is roughly $6–18/user/month — about $30–90+ a month for five people, forever, and it climbs as you hire. Nextcloud on Contabo is a flat ~$7–10/month whatever your headcount. The money break-even is almost immediate; the real cost is that you're now the person responsible for uptime and backups. Choose self-host if you value ownership and cost-at-scale and will do the admin; choose SaaS if your time is worth more than the fee and you want someone else guaranteeing recovery.

Frequently asked

Does Contabo have a 1-click Nextcloud install?

Yes, and it's free. Contabo's Nextcloud 1-click image runs on Ubuntu 24.04 with Docker and bundles Nextcloud, a Caddy reverse proxy (automatic HTTPS), Redis caching and a MariaDB database. You select it at order time (or reinstall it onto an existing VPS), set one password used for both SSH and the Nextcloud admin, and it's ready in about 30 minutes. Note it's Contabo's own recipe, not the official Nextcloud All-in-One.

How much VPS do I need for Nextcloud?

Compute is rarely the bottleneck — disk is. Contabo lists a 4 GB / 50 GB / 2 CPU recommendation, which every Cloud VPS tier clears. For around 5 users and a few hundred GB of files, the Cloud VPS 6 (6 vCPU / 12 GB / 200 GB, ~$9/mo) is a comfortable pick; or take the smaller VPS 4 and add a storage extension if you need disk but not more compute. Choose the plan by the storage you need.

Is self-hosting Nextcloud cheaper than Google Workspace or Dropbox?

At any real team size, yes. A cloud suite runs roughly $6–18/user/month — about $30–90+/month for five people, forever, scaling with headcount. Self-hosted Nextcloud on Contabo is a flat ~$7–10/month regardless of user count. You trade the per-seat fee for one server bill plus the work of running it: patching, upgrades and — critically — your own backups.

What breaks most often when self-hosting Nextcloud?

Two things. First, trusted_domains — Nextcloud refuses any hostname you haven't added to its config, which is the classic 'why can't I log in after pointing my domain' error. Second, backups: you must back up both the data directory and the database dump; one without the other can't be restored.
